What is Reflexology?
The Theory of Reflexology
Reflexology involves applying gentle pressure to areas of the feet which creates a positive effect in the corresponding area of the body. The feet are a mirror image of the bodily systems, glands & organs. The right foot corresponds to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponds to the left side of the body. Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China although modern reflexology was developed in the 1930s by Eunice Ingham. She developed maps of the entire body on the feet, observing that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
What to Expect
CONSULTATION AND FIRST SESSION
At the start of your first session, there will be a thorough health and lifestyle consultation to build up a picture of your current state of health. This will involve finding out about any medication that you take, recent operations and illnesses and your reasons for trying reflexology. All information will remain totally confidential. There will also be plenty of opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
For the treatment, you will be asked to lie on a comfortable couch with your shoes and socks removed. The atmosphere is one of quiet and calm relaxation. The treatment will begin with some gentle relaxation techniques followed by applying pressure to each of the reflex points on your feet. The pressure will be gentle but firm, designed to calm, soothe and promote your body’s own healing responses. You may wish to close your eyes and relax or you might prefer to chat during your session, this is entirely up to you. The aim is for you to feel relaxed.
Following treatment there will be have a short discussion about the session, a treatment plan or any further treatments and aftercare advice. For some health issues clients will benefit from an initial treatment plan of weekly or fortnightly sessions. Many people come for monthly sessions to maintain wellbeing, prevent new health problems and for relaxation and stress relief.
At subsequent sessions, there will be a brief discussion about how you have been since last time, followed by the reflexology treatment.
